The Content Management System is used usually by the sites which provide content on various subjects. It is also used by sites providing themes for business and many other such sites. Joomla falls under CMS and is a way of publishing content on the internet as well as the intranet. Joomla is one of the free and open source CMS available today. Joomla is written with the programming language called PHP and it uses the database called MySQL. Joomla was first founded in 2005 on the 17th of August. It was the Fork of Mambo which led to the invention of Joomla. The development team of Mambo was dissatisfied with few provisions of the structure of the company and created a website which was called OpenSourceMatters. This site was used by the makers to give different information to the web designers, general users, developers and so on. Many users joined this community and it grew popular day by day. After this immense success of the site the developers changed its name to Joomla, the meaning of the word is all together or as a whole. The first release of Joomla was on the 16th of September in the same year 2005. There were many people, as much as 3000 along with the people who followed the Development team. It was nominated for an award in the year 2007. It received two awards in the consecutive years 2006 and 2007.

Joomla includes many features and hence is very widely used by the users. Joomla includes features like RSS feeds and news flashes. To improve performance it also includes features like page caching. Other important features of Joomla are blog polls, language internationalization and printable versions of pages and it also includes website searching. It is licensed under GPL. The latest release of Joomla place was on the 21st of July, 2007. Joomla is much more acceptable than the old method of creating website by hand. Joomla needs to be installed and once it is done then it can be maintained easily.

There is a community of developers who provide Joomla with plug-ins, modules and add-ons. These modules are usually free of cost but there are modules which can be bought. Joomla is extremely easy and high performance way of building website.
